As antique enthusiasts and experts, we are keen to promote growth in this wondrous sector. We are more than happy to share our expertise and tips, helping them to determine the authenticity of bronze sculptures for themselves in the future. This article is intended as a short guide to some important factors to consider when examining and authenticating Antique Bronze Sculpture. Bronze is an alloy made by melting two different metals and mixing them. Copper, by itself, is too soft, and Tin on its own is too brittle; it breaks too easily. But if you mix a little tin into the copper, it becomes bronze, which is much harder and at the same time less brittle.

Chinese ritual bronzes - Wikipedia
Sets and individual examples of ritual bronzes survive from when they were made mainly during the Chinese Bronze Age. Ritual bronzes create quite an impression both due to their sophistication of design and manufacturing process, but also because of their remarkable durability. From around BCE, these elaborately decorated vessels were deposited as grave goods in the tombs of royalty and the nobility, and were evidently produced in very large numbers, with documented excavations finding over pieces in a single royal tomb. They were produced for an individual or social group to use in making ritual offerings of food and drink to his or their ancestors and other deities or spirits. Such ceremonies generally took place in family temples or ceremonial halls over tombs.

Content created: File last modified:. The Bronze Age. The ability to manipulate metal ores to produce useful tools is one of the major steps in the development of human civilization. It is the reason why archaeologists stop using the term "Neolithic" and start referring to societies with metal as living in the "Bronze Age" or the "Iron Age. Copper and bronze, an alloy of copper and tin can be worked at lower temperatures than iron, but in most of the world copper ore is less readily available and the finished products more fragile.

Even in the predynastic Zhou period, however, new creatures had appeared on the bronzes, notably a flamboyant long-tailed bird that may have had totemic meaning for the Zhou rulers, and flanges had begun to be large and spiky. From the outset of Zhou rule, vessels increasingly came to serve as vehicles for inscriptions that were cast to record events and report them to ancestral spirits. By late Zhou times a long inscription might have well over characters.
