HPV, a virus that can be transmitted by sex, may be implicated in breast and a raft of other cancers, according to a series of new research findings. The virus, already implicated in most cervical cancers, may play a role in a number of other malignancies, and may be involved in a three-fold increase in tonsil cancer. HPV, or human papilloma virus, has been linked to cancers of the larynx and skin, as well as malignancies of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus and mouth. In the latest study on breast cancer, researchers found that younger women with breast cancer were more likely to have HPV-positive tissue than older women. But other experts say much more work is needed: "At present a link with breast cancer would be highly speculative, but worth further investigation," said Professor Alan Rickinson, cancer virus specialist at Birmingham University. It seems to me that the virus may well be harmless residents rather than having a causative relationship.

Imaging tests can help determine the location and size of bone tumors, and whether the tumors have spread to other parts of the body. The types of imaging tests recommended depend on your individual signs and symptoms. Tests may include:. Your doctor may recommend a procedure to remove a sample of tissue biopsy from the tumor for laboratory testing. Testing can tell your doctor whether the tissue is cancerous and, if so, what type of cancer you have. It can also reveal whether the tumor cells are growing quickly or slowly. Determining the type of biopsy you need and the particulars of how it should be performed requires careful planning by your medical team.

Has your cancer treatment changed the look of your outer genitals in any way? If so, take time to get used to the changes. Check to see if any areas are sore or tender. Share what you learn about yourself with your partner.

A risk factor is anything that increases your chances of getting a disease, such as breast cancer. But having a risk factor, or even many, does not mean that you are sure to get the disease. Some risk factors for breast cancer are things you cannot change, such as getting older or inheriting certain gene changes.
